Luton Borough Council
09/11/2022 - Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday
On Friday 11 November and Sunday 14 November respectively, Luton will once again commemorate Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.
These sombre occasions represent an opportunity for residents of the town to join with the rest of the country in both moments of national reflection.
On Armistice Day, 11 November a brief service will be held outside the Town Hall War Memorial. Following a brief welcome from Rev David Kesterton, Dean of Luton, the Last Post will be played before a two minutes’ silence, concluded by the Reveille and readings from the Mayor of Luton and the Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire.
Remembrance Sunday will follow its usual pattern. A parade will leave Park Street West at 10.40 and march towards the Town Hall for a short service beginning at 11am. This will include a time of silence, prayers, exhortations from civic leaders and the laying of wreaths at the foot of the War Memorial.
Hazel Simmons MBE, Leader of the Council, said: “This year we have been reminded of the fragility of peace, even on our own continent that just last century was at the epicentre of two of the world’s most devastating conflicts.”
“The tragedy of war continues to cast a terrible shadow over us. It is as important as ever that we remember those who have served us in the past and for whom the memories of war still bring great pain.
“I do hope you will be able to join us as a town we honour the dead as well as those who continue to serve.”
