04/06/2024 - Success for Luton’s third Employability Day
Young people of Luton aged 10-19, accompanied by parents and carers, flocked to the Chiltern Academy on 28 May for Luton’s third Employability Day.
Over 400 people registered for the event, which was hosted by Reach Society in collaboration with Luton Council, to meet with employers and role models and explore the range of opportunities and pathways for further education, training and employment.
Over thirty businesses and organisations across the public, private and third sector participated in the event including EasyJet, London Luton Airport, GKN, Bedfordshire Fire Service, Bedfordshire Police, Luton & Dunstable Hospital, Mary Seacole Housing, Hannah Solicitors, London Zoological Society, Connect2Luton, TUI, The RAF and the British Army.
These organisations exhibited the extensive array of careers open to those aged 10-19, with a focus on professional role models from the black community. A local young man Jamal, an economics graduate, shared his experience of how attending Reach Society’s events and receiving mentoring from Pastor Trevor Adams helped him to gain employment in the finance team of London Luton Airport.
Gerard McCleave, Corporate Director for Inclusive Economy, said: “To see hundreds of people being enriched with the vast array of opportunities on offer to Luton’s next generation was inspiring. Luton Council supported the Employability Day as we want to create a town built on fairness, to overcome structural barriers often faced by communities across the town. By showcasing career choices and advising on how to attain them, the Employability Day has helped to dismantle those barriers.”
Dr Dwain Neil OBE, Chairman of Reach Society, said “With such a wide range of local role models and employers, there was something for everyone. We were particularly pleased with the turnout from young people of African, Caribbean and Dual Heritage, inspiring them to develop viable skills to access local employment and career opportunities."
