Luton Borough Council
24/03/2022 - St George’s Day celebrations are back!
Luton council is delighted to announce the welcome return of the popular St George’s Day celebrations, to be held in Market Hill and St George’s Square this year.
Entertainment will include immersive dragon performances, and Punch and Judy shows throughout the morning from magician Matthew Garrett,. Music will be performed by Luton Brass Band during the day and DJs from Work Your Soul.
There will be a variety of street food stalls, which have proved popular at Luton Street Fest, along with a range of exciting workshops and arts and crafts provided by independent creative company Little Red Studios.
Those wanting to use St George’s Day as a chance to find out more about the history of the town will be able to join the heritage walks with Paul Hammond, covering the Town Hall, George Street and Market Hill.
Mrs Gumbles Fair Rides will be in St. Georges Square and more activities will be announced closer to the date.
Luton BID are funding children’s entertainment for the day for this family friendly event, including the Punch and Judy shows, magic between shows and balloon modelling. As well as story telling with Aaron Spendelow - including George and the Dragon – there will be the opportunity to design and make your own flag or shield.
Luton Rising, the council’s airport company, is generously acting as principal sponsor, making the event possible once again.
Cllr Javeria Hussain, chair of Luton Rising, said "Luton Rising is delighted to be part of this, and to be able to say thank you for the ongoing support from residents by supporting St George’s Day. We pride ourselves on providing funding for a variety of vital community events that take place across the town - including this one - and we hope that everyone has a fantastic day.”
Julia Horsman, Luton BID Manager said “We are delighted to be able to support Luton Council with the St Georges Day celebrations by arranging and funding the children’s entertainment. The event has always been a highlight in the town centre calendar but has been sadly missed due to the pandemic, so it is fantastic to see its return. Celebrations like this give people more reasons to visit and enjoy everything that Luton town centre has to offer, and we are looking forward to the fun and excitement.”
Cllr Sian Goding, portfolio holder for Regeneration and Inclusive Growth said, said "We’re very excited to have such a great St George’s Day planned, and to have expanded it to include Market Hill so we can draw in more of Luton’s local businesses. Market Hill has some great independent cafes and bars as well, which those attending will also be able to visit.
“We’re confident that this is going to be a great day out for everyone, another one of our fantastic events that are finally taking place again.”
St George’s Day starts at 11am in both Market Hill and St George’s Square on Saturday 23 April, and will run until 6pm. It’s expected that local bars and venues will also be holding celebrations from 6pm, which will be added to our event page.
Keep an eye on the St George's Day page on our website for regular updates and visit our events pages or the events pages on the Love Luton website to find out more about other events taking place in the town.
