01/11/2024 - Remembrance events taking place in Luton

In the year that marks the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, Luton Council will honour those who lost their lives and served their country, in two remembrance events.

Sunday 10 and Monday 11 November, our town will have the opportunity of commemorating Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday. These are two key moments of national reflection on the sacrifices of previous generations, whilst at the same time remembering men and woman currently serving with the armed services.

On Sunday 10 November, Remembrance Sunday, a parade will leave Park Street West at 10.40 and march towards the Town Hall for a short service led by Pastor Lloyd Denny beginning at 11am. This will include a time of silence, prayers, participation from civic leaders and the laying of wreaths at the foot of the War Memorial.

On Monday 11 November, Armistice Day, a brief service will be held from the Town Hall steps. Attended by various civic dignitaries. Attendees will be welcomed shortly before 11am by Rev David Kesterton, Dean of Luton. The Last Post will be played before a two minutes’ silence on the hour. The brief commemoration will conclude after the singing of the National Anthem.

Cllr Hazel Simmons MBE, Leader of the Council, said: “As the country comes together to remember servicemen and women we will have the chance to share in these poignant moments as we come together outside the Town Hall on Sunday and Monday.

“Both town centre occasions are always well supported by residents and we invite people to join us as we honour those who have lost their lives as well as those who continue to serve.”

Please note we are also aware of two other services in Luton:

  • a service of remembrance on Sunday 10 at the Marsh Road War Memorial, starting at 11am
  • a service on 11November at the War Memorial in Stopsley, starting at 11am
This year we will also be commemorating those who lost their lives in service at Rothesay Cemetery which has recently received a Commonwealth War Graves plaque.
