01/08/2024 - Reassurance for communities following tragic events in Southport

Councillor Hazel Simmons, Leader of Luton Council, and John Tizard, Bedfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner, have sought to reassure local communities following tragic events in Southport.

They've said: "In the midst of mourning the tragic deaths of children and expressing our heartfelt solidarity with a grieving community and all those affected following the horrific attack in Southport, we're appalled at the hatred and violence perpetrated on the streets of that town.

"We know very well that those involved in these despicable acts are deliberately peddling false information and narratives to exploit a tragic series of events for their own malicious purpose.

"Bedfordshire Police have confirmed to the Luton Community Safety Partnership they're taking all necessary steps to increase vigilance across our town, and we'll continue to do all we can to reassure and protect local people who may be concerned about everything that has happened.

"As a town, we stand in solidarity with the community of Southport in their grief, and stand with them against all those who seek to divide our community – Luton is always no place for hate."
