30/06/2022 - Read. Respond. Register.

Luton Council is launching a campaign “Read. Respond. Register” to encourage residents to look out for letters or emails containing their voter registration details, which are being sent from the start of July.

This process, known as the Annual Canvass, reminds everyone of the need to make sure they are on the electoral register. It ensures the register is kept up to date and identifies any residents who aren’t registered, so they can be encouraged to do so.

The form requires people to quickly and easily confirm if the details are correct or amend them if they are not. This can be done either by return of post or online. Later in the year canvass staff will visit households that have not responded.

Robin Porter, Electoral Registration Officer at Luton Council, said: “Read. Respond. Register is an easy way for people to take just a few minutes and make sure they are on the electoral register.

“It’s important that residents keep an eye out for letters from the council so we can make sure we have the right details on the electoral register for every address in Luton.

“If you’re not currently registered, your name will not appear in the messages we send. If you want to register, the easiest way is online at Register to Vote, or we’ll send you information explaining how to do this in the post.”

As well as enabling people to vote in the local elections coming up in May 2023, being on the electoral role has other significant benefits. Credit companies look at the register in helping them make decisions about lending and not being on it can negatively affect ratings.

It’s especially important for those who have changed addresses in the past year to make sure they are registered at their current address.

Read. Respond. Register. It only takes a few moments and ensures you can take part in the democratic process whether for the first time or you’ve done it for decades.
