12/02/2024 - Plans for the Vale cemetery extension published

Following the granting of planning permission, plans are being finalised on the extension of The Vale cemetery, to meet local demand for burials.

The council has acquired land for the new Vale extension adjacent to the existing cemetery situated in Stopsley. A survey of the Vale's burial capacity conducted in 2018 suggested that the cemetery would run out of burial land by 2025.

Unfortunately, a rise in deaths and burials during COVID 19 has made the need for extension even more urgent before the site runs out of burial land and to accommodate future demand. The new extension will allow for up to 7,000 graves, comprising double and single grave plots and a new natural burial site with 700 burial spaces.

Our priority is to maximise the capacity at the site and to protect the new Vale extension from flooding — a challenge we’ve had with the current site — and to that end, the works will include additional drainage mechanisms and infrastructure.

Since the new extension is situated on green belt land, we are mindful of the regulations pertaining to this land. Our goal is to retain the openness of the site, which will help to preserve the tranquillity and biodiversity of the area.

The council’s plans for the new site are very similar to those already in place at the current site which allows families to plant flowers and have personal items within grave plots.

To respect the space of each individual grave, no encroachment (that is no personal tributes that cross boundaries onto an adjacent grave space or the walkway space between graves) will be permitted outside of the grave plot. We have improved drainage so that one grave doesn't flood the other. Therefore, items that could contribute to flooding—such as paving slabs, tiles or artificial grass—will not be allowed. Planting of trees and permanent placement of seating will also not be allowed, but loan chairs will be available for families while they are visiting.

We’ve been engaging with funeral directors, faith leaders and families about the plans. In recent weeks, the Vale management team has also held a number of daytime, evening, and weekend drop-in sessions with stakeholders, residents, and the general public at the Vale, Bury Park Community Centre, and the Mall.

Cllr Javed Hussain, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Development and Highways, said: “It is our priority to give residents who have passed away an appropriate resting place. We know that Vale cemetery is appreciated as a peaceful place to remember loved ones. This extension will ensure that continues, with burial spaces for the future.

“We understand the sensitivity of this matter, but the regulations we’re implementing will ensure the longevity of Vale cemetery as a burial ground for the community. Therefore, we encourage residents to view the extension plans and send in any questions or concerns you want to raise.”
