16/09/2025 - Parents advised to act now as high school applications deadline approaches

The new school year may only just have begun, but for parents and carers of children in Year 6, the countdown to selecting a secondary school has already started, with the deadline to apply for a high school place fast approaching.

Families are being reminded that applications for a high school place for September 2026 must be submitted by 31 October 2025, even if:
  • you’ve applied directly to a school
  • your chosen school is outside of Luton
  • you’re applying to a faith school, foundation school, academy, or free school

To support parents in making this important decision, schools and academies across Luton are hosting open days throughout September and October. These events are a great chance to explore different schools, speak to teachers and pupils, and get a real feel for the learning environment.

Councillor Javeria Hussain, portfolio holder for education, said “Choosing the right secondary school is one of the most important decisions a parent will make for their child. Open days are a brilliant way to get a sense of what a school is really like: the atmosphere, the support on offer and the opportunities available. I strongly encourage all parents to attend and find out which school will best support their child’s aspirations.”
