05/03/2024 - Opportunity for the public to join new body championing access to Luton’s countryside

The Luton Local Access Forum (LAF) is looking for members of the public to form a dedicated team of volunteers.

LAF is an independent body which advises Luton Council on improvements to public access for outdoor recreation and sustainable travel. The council was previously a member of a Joint Local Access Forum with Central Bedfordshire but this newly formed LAF will now reflect Luton’s needs. It is looking for new members, from a variety of backgrounds, who enjoy the outdoors and are interested in protecting and maintaining access to Luton’s countryside and rights of way.

Acting as an advisory body to the council, the forum will consider important local issues related to rights of way and access to green spaces alongside the need to conserve the natural beauty of the area. Those who are part of the group will also take into account all forms of access including walking, riding and cycling.

The forum will meet at least twice a year, with additional meetings arranged as required.

Cllr Javed Hussain, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Development and Highways, said: “It is an exciting time to join the new Local Access Forum. Access to the outdoors is crucial for both our physical and mental wellbeing.

“The council is keen to ensure everyone is given the opportunity to gain enjoyment from accessing Luton’s natural environment. For members of the public who share the same passion, this is an extremely rewarding group to be part of.”
