29/01/2026 - New reuse shops open at Luton’s recycling centres
Luton Council has taken another step towards a more sustainable future with the launch of two permanent reuse shops at the Eaton Green and Progress Way Tidy Tips in partnership with SUEZ, building on the success of previous pop-up reuse shops.
The new purpose-built shops offer a wide range of quality pre-loved items at affordable prices, helping residents save money, reduce waste and give unwanted goods a second life. The shops were officially opened on Monday 26 January with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Councillor Ghulam Abbas, portfolio holder for Strategic Waste Authority.
The Progress Way Tidy Tip is located on Progress Way, Sundon, Luton, LU4 9TR.
All items sold in the shops have been donated by residents and include clothing, electricals, books, toys and other reusable household items. Any profits generated are reinvested locally through a social value fund, supporting community groups, charities and local initiatives. Some items, such as bikes, are also donated directly to schools and residents in need.
Residents can donate good-quality, pre-owned items at either recycling centre by informing site operatives, who will place them in the reuse container. Donations help reduce carbon emissions linked to manufacturing new products while supporting the local community.
Councillor Ghulam Abbas, portfolio holder for Strategic Waste Authority, said: “This launch marks another important step in our commitment to reducing waste and improving sustainability. The response to the pop-up shops was fantastic and these permanent shops allow us to make reuse part of everyday life. I encourage everyone to visit, whether to donate items or pick up a bargain, and help make a positive difference for our town.”
Jon Melling, Operations Manager for SUEZ, said: “The reuse shops will give people the opportunity to save money, and at the same time reduce their carbon footprint by opting for pre-loved items over new. We’re looking forward to welcoming residents to both reuse shops.”
Dr Adam Read MBE, Chief External Affairs and Sustainability Officer for SUEZ, said: “I’m delighted to have been able to attend the official opening of the reuse shops in Luton. These shops play a vital role in preserving our natural resources by keeping items in use for longer and have great social and environmental value.”
The reuse shops are open from 10am to 4pm on their operating days.

- Progress Way reuse shop: Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday (closed Wednesday and Thursday)
