06/11/2025 - More than 50,000 sq metres of roads resurfaced in Luton this summer to create safer, smoother roads
Work to repair roads that are near the end of their life has been completed in Luton. These roads have been resurfaced to replace damage to the layers in the surface that cannot be treated or repaired in any other way.
The council has also used a specialist surface treatment known as micro-surfacing on an additional 20,000 square metres of roads. Resurfacing repairs structural failures in the lower layers of the road, as well as the surface, restoring shape and strength.
Using some of the most advanced high-definition imagery to understand in detail the condition of its roads means that the council can prioritise the roads in the worst condition as well as fix defects and potholes.
The work is part of the council’s £6 million programme of highway works this year, which has seen over 1,000 defects and potholes fixed, along with the use of sustainable surface treatments that have reduced the number of potholes forming on roads around Luton in the future, and have also removed a significant amount of carbon from the roads maintenance process.
The council continues to increase its budget to fix more roads every year, responding directly to residents who told us that improving roads was the highest priority when asked for feedback about highways and transportation issues.
Cllr Javed Hussain, Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Development and Highways at Luton Council, said: “Resurfacing is a vital part of our annual road repair programme, and residents have raised the importance of highways.
The additional investment allocated to fixing Luton’s roads this year enables us to continue work that we started many years ago, to improve the condition of our roads, fix potholes and use treatments to stop them forming in the first place.”
Jerry Pert, Operations Director at VolkerHighways said: ““We’re proud to be delivering essential resurfacing works across Luton in partnership with the council. By prioritising the roads in greatest need and applying a range of resurfacing techniques, we’re ensuring that every pound spent delivers maximum value without compromising on quality. This collaborative approach means residents benefit from safer, smoother journeys and long-lasting improvements to their local infrastructure.”
