23/01/2026 - Luton Council continues major investment in road repairs and pothole prevention

The council has delivered a record number of pothole repairs over the past year. This has been supported by a £6 million investment this financial year and ongoing preventative maintenance to improve the condition of roads across the borough.

Over the last 12 months, more than 50,000 square metres of road have been resurfaced and nearly 800 potholes repaired. The council has also introduced greener, smarter maintenance methods designed to extend the life of the highway network, reduce defects and deliver lasting improvements across the town.

Working in partnership with its highway maintenance contractor, VolkerHighways, the council has continued to repair carriageway defects, resurface roads and carry out preventative treatments to reduce the likelihood of potholes forming.

The surface treatment programme helps keep roads in good condition for longer by sealing cracks, preventing water ingress and improving skid resistance, making journeys safer and smoother for all road users. These treatments are also more carbon efficient than traditional repair methods, as they improve the existing road surface without the need for full replacement using new asphalt. Treatments used across Luton include surface dressing, asphalt preservation, asphalt rejuvenation and micro asphalt.

Councillor Javed Hussain, portfolio holder for sustainable development and highways at Luton Council, said: “By continuing to invest in protecting and maintaining our roads, we are reducing the number of potholes forming in the future. Alongside delivering record levels of repair, we are making progress in decarbonising our maintenance processes and ensuring better value for money over the long term.

“We understand how frustrating potholes can be for residents, which is why we are investing £6 million in our roads this financial year to make them safer, smoother and more reliable for everyone.”

Jerry Pert, Operations Director at VolkerHighways, said: “Potholes continue to be a challenge for local authorities across the UK due to ageing roads and increasingly severe weather. Our teams are working hard to respond promptly and deliver high-quality repairs across Luton.

“Preventative maintenance is helping to reduce the number of potholes forming, but it is inevitable that some will still appear. Wherever possible, repairs are carried out permanently, and urgent cases are treated with temporary fixes followed by lasting solutions.”

Residents are encouraged to report potholes via the council’s website. If a pothole is particularly deep or poses an immediate risk, residents can call 01582 501333 or email [email protected] for same-day assessment.
