08/11/2024 - Luton Borough Council joins campaign for people to ‘do one thing’ to improve their financial wellbeing

Luton Council is asking people to ‘do one thing’ to improve their financial wellbeing as part of the Money and Pensions Service’s Talk Money Week.

Held from the 4th to the 8th of November, Talk Money Week aims to reduce the stigma around money by encouraging conversations among everyone, from families and friends to colleagues and communities.

As part of this year’s theme, Luton Council, is asking everyone to get involved and ‘do one thing’ and check out their Supporting You pages and Better off calculator on the council’s website. There is lots of money saving advice, debt assistance, and ways to check you aren’t missing out on some of the unclaimed benefits in Luton.

Other things you could do include creating an in-depth budget or looking closely at a pension; or talking to a child about pocket money or exploring the MoneyHelper website.

Whichever option people choose, they are being encouraged to talk to others about what they did and why, in the hope of inspiring them to join in too.

As part of the week, Luton Council will be running various activities including:

  • A breakfast Show Radio advert on InspireFM, highlighting that its Talk Money Week and telling people to check out Luton Supporting You Pages and the Better Off calculator
  • Pensioners Coffee afternoon on Thursday at Hockwell Ring community centre, from 12 noon to 2pm, the council’s information services will be there to answer questions
  • A care leavers finance workshop on Thursday
  • Woodlands School Parents Coffee morning with a range of information services on site

Taking control of money, talking openly about it and sharing the burden that worries can cause often has a huge impact on our health and relationships. It also helps someone to make better, more informed decisions.

Launched by the Money and Pensions Service (MaPS) in 2020. It includes ambitious ten-year goals to help everyone make the most of their money and pensions.

Councillor Rob Roche, Portfolio Holder for Finance, at Luton Borough Council, said:

“Talk Money Week is an opportunity to talk about the work organisations like Luton Council and others in our community, are doing to support people to budget and save as well as to manage their benefits and take control of their debt.

“If you only do one thing this week, then look at the ‘Supporting You’ pages on our website and use our ‘better off’ calculator to check you’re not missing out on some of the millions of pounds of unclaimed benefits in Luton. The website has lots of useful information on cutting down your bills and finding assistance with debt. Check it out, and tell your family and friends about it too!”

Oliver Morley, Chief Executive at the Money and Pensions Service, says:

“Talking about money with friends, family and children – or experts if necessary – can help you feel more confident and give you greater financial resilience. That’s why, as part of our annual Talk Money Week campaign, we’re calling for you to ‘do one thing’ to help improve your financial wellbeing, to tell others about it and ask them to do the same.

“We know starting conversations about money can be difficult and so we have all the ideas and information you’ll need on our website, along with the tools to get you started.

“Whether it’s something small, like starting a conversation, or something bigger, like making an informed long-term decision, this is the chance for everyone to get involved and start talking about money, together.”
