07/05/2025 - Joint statement in response to the situation in India, Pakistan and Kashmir

A joint statement from Luton Council and Luton Council of Faiths.

Cllr Hazel Simmons MBE, Leader of Luton Council, said: “The tragic events and loss of innocent lives in Indian-administered and Pakistan-administered Kashmiri regions and in parts of Pakistan over the last couple of weeks have affected many in our community. Last night’s attacks will be particularly distressing as they took place in an area that is home to family and friends of many people in Luton.

“It is only natural that there will be concern, distress, and anxiety within our town today. On behalf of Luton Council, I extend our thoughts and prayers to all those impacted—both in the region and here at home.

“We call on international leaders to take urgent steps to de-escalate the situation through dialogue. Escalation will only lead to the suffering of more innocent people, and everything must be done to prevent further harm.

“We are a town enriched by our diversity, where people of many backgrounds, faiths, and cultures live side by side. Luton is no place for hate which is why it’s important that our communities stand united in our collective call for peace.

“So let us continue to support one another with compassion and solidarity, and maintain our harmony as we always have.”

Local faith leaders have come together through the Luton Council of Faiths and stated: “As Muslims, as Hindus, as Sikhs, despite our differences, we have always lived side by side, promoting peace and mutual support in our local community.

“Many incidents have tested our patience and resilience. We have not much control over what is happening internationally, but we can continue the good work locally.

“We call upon everyone to rise above the social media manipulation and hate, and live by the code and ethics of our faith. Every human has the right to peace, justice, freedom and liberty. United we stand, divided we fall – We are Luton!”
