30/11/2023 - Help someone build a life away from the streets this Christmas

With the giving season upon us, Luton Council, in collaboration with The Luton Homeless Partnership, is reminding the public how they can best support vulnerable individuals on the streets of Luton this Christmas.

As part of the campaign, people are being encouraged to consider donating to Luton’s alternative giving scheme ‘Big Change Luton’, rather than putting money into hands.

The scheme ensures public donations are used effectively and where it will really make a difference to those in need.

David Morris, Chair of The Luton Homeless Partnership said: "We know how hard it is to walk past people out on the streets in the cold, but giving money directly doesn’t help the root of the problem.

By donating to Big Change Luton this Christmas, you know that your money will be used wisely, and will directly benefit someone who has genuinely slept rough.”

One hundred percent of donations go into a central pot which can be accessed by individuals through local charities that support those associated with rough sleeping. Applicants can access funds within a couple of days through a quick application process.

It’s easy to give, with a contactless donation point outside the Starbucks Travel Centre opposite Luton railway station and a dedicated Just Giving page.

One applicant who has used the services provided by Keystage Housing was given money through the scheme after successfully bidding for permanent council accommodation. To turn the shell of a flat into a home, she was able to purchase white goods and a cooker. These key items helped her to settle and progress towards the next stage of her recovery.

Paul Prosser, Head of Welfare Services at NOAH said: "Our outreach team engages daily with individuals on Luton's streets, providing a support system for those who choose to accept it. But often, individuals have many complexities which take time to overcome.”

“At NOAH, we continue to support people for as long as it takes. We can help with access to accommodation, drug and mental health treatment, benefits support, hot food, and a mirage of other services alongside our partners at The Luton Homeless Partnership.” Paul added.

In November, NOAH obtained funds from the Big Change Fund to purchase eight winter coats for people who had insufficient clothing during the cold weather. Clients said that they were ‘really pleased’ to be better prepared to cope with the inclement weather and stay warm.

Councillor Maria Lovell, Luton Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Safety said: “We know at this time of year our residents may consider giving to individuals asking for money on our streets, but we’re asking people to give wisely.

Nobody has to raise funds for hostel accommodation and a hot meal can always be provided free to those at the point of need in Luton.

Big Change Luton is a great campaign that with support from our town, will continue to help many individuals build a life away from the streets.”

The alternative giving campaign is managed by The Luton Homeless Partnership, which consists of more than 20 partners from across the voluntary, public, and private sector, all working together to tackle homelessness and the issues associated.
