Luton Borough Council
03/05/2024 - Final call to volunteer for Luton Rising Festival Makers to welcome over 100,000 visitors to the town during BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend.
BBC Radio 1’s flagship music festival, Big Weekend, will be coming to Luton’s very own Stockwood Park from Friday 24 to Sunday 26 May. The festival will see headline acts like Coldplay, RAYE and Chase & Status take the stage, and over 100,000 visitors hea
Luton Rising, the council’s airport company, have sponsored the volunteering programme and are calling for more Luton Rising Festival Makers to step forward for the big event. Volunteers will play an integral role of the running of the event, welcoming visitors, guiding them along routes to the event, and providing advice and directions to travellers.
All Luton Rising Festival Makers will be given full training on customer service, communication, and health and safety, provided by Luton Adult Learning. These sessions will provide volunteers with the knowledge needed for the role, as well as transferrable skills they can take with them into careers.
Lunch and snacks will also be provided throughout volunteering shifts, as well as a free t-shirt and other merchandise, including a goody bag.
Councillor Javeria Hussain, community engagement lead and Luton Rising board member, said: “We are delighted to be sponsoring the volunteer programme and showing off our town to thousands of guests throughout the weekend. The Luton Rising Festival Makers will play a crucial part of this festival, and we want those visiting our town to remember the skilled, knowledgeable, and friendly volunteers that helped bring this event to life.”
Councillor James Taylor, Executive portfolio holder for Inclusive Growth at Luton Council, said: “BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend is one of the biggest events this town has had the pleasure of hosting, and it is so important for us as a town to seize this opportunity. Volunteering as a Luton Rising Festival Maker means you are not only part of this historical event, but also taking advantage of the skills and experience on offer”.
