15/06/2023 - Enter Luton in bloom
Communities across the town are being encouraged to take part in a new grassroots, community-driven initiative which aims to uplift the spirits of the town through the power of gardening.
‘Luton in Bloom’ is an innovative community project which encourages communities to grow items for their homes and workplaces, learn life skills and meet new people while improving the overall look and feel of the town.
The scheme is kicking off with a gardening competition where experienced and novice gardeners alike can submit things they have grown and nurtured, with cash prizes up for grabs.
By connecting people and plants, this competition aims to enhance overall well-being, foster stronger relationships between neighbours and create a vibrant sense of community within Luton.
Sujel Miah, founder of Luton in Bloom, said: “Our vision for Luton in Bloom is to empower individuals and unite our community in a common purpose. Together, we can create a town that flourishes with beauty, vibrancy, and a profound sense of belonging.
“Luton in Bloom is an invitation to embark on an exciting journey of growth, connection, well-being and shared prosperity.
“The competition will not only showcase stunning front gardens but also encourages residents to grow their own fruit and vegetables, explore innovative ideas, sustainable practices, and creative approaches to communal spaces.
“Through these collective efforts, the hope is that in years to come Luton will be nurtured into a haven of natural beauty, promoting personal well-being, community spirit bound by kindness and togetherness, and a greener future for all.”
Hazel Simmons, Leader of Luton Council, said: “So much thought, research and planning has gone into this wonderful initiative which has the potential to transform our town and our communities if enough people get behind it.
“This is much more than a gardening competition, it’s about connecting people with nature, addressing social isolation, improving physical and mental wellbeing, creating harmony, instilling civic pride and improving the look and feel of our town. What’s not to love?
“We are obviously fully behind it and are pleased we have been able to provide some initial funding towards it through our airport company Luton Rising which will also be taking part themselves as they work to enhance the area outside their own offices on Kimpton Road.
“I encourage residents and businesses across the town to get behind this initiative and enter the competition.”
Residents and businesses can enter across five categories: Best Residential Front Display, Best Looking Fruit and Veg Patch, Largest Vegetable, Best Community Garden and Best School Garden Project.
