18/11/2022 - Employability award for Luton
Luton Council has won the prestigious Fellow Award from The Reach Society for the first ever Employability Day to be held in Luton.
The Foundation for Reach Society, in conjunction with Luton Council and the Local Employability Assistance Partnership Project (LEAPP), delivered the event which was hosted by Chiltern Academy in May this year.
Over 35 employers (local, national, private and public sector) and 30 professional role models from the Black community took part to deliver this all-day event where more than 125 participating young people aged 10 to 19 and their parents or responsible adults were able to engage first-hand with employers and professionals and hear practical advice and guidance on career opportunities and planning, plus pathways to success.
The Award was received on behalf of Luton Council by Cllr Aslam Khan, Deputy Leader and Cllr Javeria Hussain, Chair of Luton Rising along with local volunteer Margaret Matthews BEM, accompanied by Sultan Khan and Maureen Drummond from the social justice and community team. The Luton team are pictured with Dr Trevor Adams, who was one of the key champions of the council’s Black Lives Matter motion in 2021.
Cllr Aslam Khan said, “The employability event enabled many young people to meet and talk with role models and discover career paths and roles available to them in Luton. We are committed to making Luton a town that thrives and where no-one is left behind. Working with our partners, we are here to support young people at all stages of their journey from school to employment so they can achieve their best potential and thrive”.
