22/04/2022 - Could you be a Luton Climate Change Champion

Luton Council has launched a competition as part of its ‘Easy Being Green’ campaign.

The campaign aims to highlight the ease at which people can make small lifestyle changes to tackle climate change and the significant impact such changes can have. These everyday actions are crucial in supporting the council’s aim of a net zero Luton by 2040.

The Climate Change Champions competition aims to find inspiring examples in our town of ways people can reduce their carbon footprint. Residents are encouraged to submit details of actions they take, along with images and short videos. Examples could be related to growing their own food, preventing food waste, repairing household items, fuel and energy saving, sustainable transport and low impact fashion or recycling. They can also indicate how such actions can save money and time.

As a prize, the winner will receive a ZSL family membership –for a family of 2 adults, up to 4 children- worth £325. The membership enables a year’s free entry to both London and Whipsnade Zoo, details of which can be found here: https://www.zsl.org/gift-membership. Alternatively, the equivalent value in high street vouchers will be awarded to the winner.

In return, the winner of the competition will have their actions publicised regularly, with a description of what they do, images and short video clips until December 2022.

Councillor Tom Shaw, Portfolio Holder for Climate Change said “Each action we take on climate change makes a difference. Our Climate Change Champions will highlight how small lifestyle changes are impactful, attainable and often cost free – if anything our residents could actually save money!”

“I’m very excited to hear what our community is doing to tackle this issue in their everyday lives - the more original the idea, the better! Whilst we are taking steps to lead the way on climate change locally, from reducing emissions in council buildings to using gas-to-liquid fuel in our vehicle fleet, we know the people of Luton are also key to change. Those with experiences, ideas and ‘green’ lifestyles are our allies and we need to hear their voices.”

Luton’s residents can enter by emailing the council at [email protected] and the competition will be open for submissions from 22 April until 27 May. The winning household will be announced on June 5, World Environment Day after which they will become a Climate Change Champion until 31 December 2022.
