16/03/2023 - Celebrate the Coronation in Luton

Young people in Luton are being invited to join the Our Global Luton party to celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort on Saturday 6 May.

Our Global Luton party is being organised by Luton Council and Luton 2040 to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III. The day will kick off with a colourful parade of young people from schools, youth and children’s groups from across Luton celebrating the different countries with links to Luton, followed by a screening of the coronation on a big screen and a party open to everyone in Luton with entertainment, food and activities. People are encouraged to bring their own picnic and celebrate with the whole Luton community.

The organisers are on the lookout for youth and children’s groups, schools, faith groups, music and sports clubs or any other groups of young people who would like to take part in the Our Global Luton parade. They are looking for groups of 10 – 12 children to represent a country that has strong links with Luton.

Cllr Hazel Simmons MBE, Leader of Luton Council, said: ‘This is a great opportunity for young people in Luton to take the lead in our town’s celebration of the Coronation. It was a great honour for Luton to be one of the first places visited by the King after his accession and it was wonderful to see how our many diverse communities came together to welcome him. This party will be another occasion when we come together to celebrate.”

To take part the groups will need to choose a country they would like to represent that they feel has strong ties with Luton. This could be a country from which they or members of their family may have migrated to Luton, or a country which is important to that particular group of children. They then confirm their choice with the Luton 2040 team to make sure no other group is already representing the country they have selected - first come, first served!

The groups will then create or gather visual items that can be carried or worn to represent the country in the parade. This can be anything from posters, costumes, musical instruments or food. The organisers will provide one large flag of the country they are representing which the group will carry during the parade.

Please register ff you are interested in bringing some groups from your school, youth or children’s group to be part of this historic occasion
