04/09/2025 - Back-to-school road safety reminder

As young people across Luton head back to school this week, Luton Council is reminding parents, carers and pupils of the importance of safe and sustainable travel to and from school.

The reminder comes as part of the ongoing Safer School Journeys campaign, delivered in partnership with the Bedfordshire Road Safety Partnership (BRSP). The campaign encourages parents, carers, pupils, and school staff to choose healthier and safer travel options such as walking, cycling, scooting, or car-sharing. By reducing the number of cars on our roads and the need to park outside schools, we can enhance the environment and improve road safety.

This academic year, the council and its partners will continue working with schools through a range of activities and assemblies to promote road safety. Support will include providing balance bikes and scooters, sharing walking zone maps to help parents find safer parking options away from school gates, and organising action days with enforcement teams.

Councillor Javed Hussain, Portfolio Holder for Road Safety, said: “The start of a new school year is exciting but can also feel hectic. Many young people may be making independent school journeys for the first time, starting at a new school, or taking up cycling as a mode of travel. Road safety is a shared responsibility, and we all play a part in keeping everyone safe, especially vulnerable groups such as children, by following the rules of the road and travelling with care.

“The back-to-school season is the perfect time to build good habits around safer and more sustainable school runs. Choosing to walk, cycle, scoot, or park further away not only keeps our roads safer and eases congestion but also makes a real difference to air quality and children’s health.”

More information about the campaign and advice on how to stay safe when travelling to and from school is available on our website.
