07/10/2024 - A call for peace

With a year passing since the deadly terrorist attacks in Israel followed by the hugely distressing violence, killing and humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and now the escalating conflict impacting communities in the wider Middle East, Luton Council has reaffirmed its call for an immediate ceasefire in the region.

Councillor Hazel Simmons, Leader of Luton Council, said: “We witnessed the terrible attacks last October that killed innocent men, women and children in Israel. And then every day since on our televisions and online we are seeing the killing of innocent men, women and children in Gaza.

“This is an utterly devastating situation that is now turning into a wider regional conflict in which even more innocent people are getting killed, wounded and having their homes and lives destroyed and disrupted.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with all those affected by this catastrophe.

"We desperately want violence to stop from all sides. The levels of killing and suffering of innocent civilians is incomprehensible, and we share the deep anger and upset being felt across our communities.

“We once again call for an immediate ceasefire and the return of all hostages.

"As a council we have and will continue to voice our concerns, and call on our national leaders to provide sufficient humanitarian aid and redouble all efforts towards the implementation of a peaceful, two state solution."
