Luton's unregistered schools strategy

Unregistered schools are those, as defined by Ofsted, which operate outside the supervision of the Department for Education, local authorities or Ofsted inspection framework.

Each local authority has a statutory duty to safeguard all children, whether they are educated in a state school, independent school or at home.

Children who attend unregistered schools are considered to be at greater risk due to the lack of regulation of these settings.

We take our safeguarding responsibilities extremely seriously and have developed a strategy against unregistered schools. You can download this at the bottom of the page.

The purpose of the strategy is to reduce the risk of unregistered schools operating in Luton by pooling information across departments within the council.

By promoting a multi-agency approach to identifying and responding to such potential establishments, we believe this will help to minimise the potential risk to the wellbeing of Luton's children.

If you are aware of an unregistered school, or believe there is a possibility a school may be unregistered, please download and complete the form below and email it to [email protected].

If your query is urgent contact the safeguarding in education team on 01584 548980.
