The national Census, conducted by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), takes place every ten years, and is a count of every person living in the UK. The results of the last Census held in March 2011 are now being released.

The 2011 Census estimated the population for Luton to be 203,200. A range of statistics on the borough and its wards can be found in the downloads section below.

The 2011 Census was taken in March 2011 and the initial population and household estimates were released in July 2012.  More detailed information will be released on a phased basis from November 2012.
The statistics produced are used to determine how much money is allocated to towns like Luton for local services, including health, the police, schools and colleges, housing, roads and public transport - and encompassing the full range of services we provided, such as social care and sports and leisure facilities.
Census information is also used to assess the need for additional housing and determine Government funding for new homes.
