05/05/2021 - Up to £9,000 for eligible businesses most impacted by coronavirus restrictions

A third round of the Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG), which is aimed at businesses affected by the pandemic, is open for applications.

However, there are many eligible businesses that still haven’t applied and they are being strongly urged to do so as soon as possible to avoid missing out on this funding opportunity.

This discretionary scheme has been developed by the council to help those which have not legally been forced to close due to government restrictions but have been severely impacted and that haven’t been able to access previous grant schemes. Whilst the first two rounds of the ARG were targeted towards specific sectors, this third round has been broadened to support any business with under 250 employees which has suffered as a result of the pandemic.

It will also help businesses that don't pay business rates, such as taxi and private hire drivers, mobile hairdressers, driving instructors and businesses working from home, as well as nurseries and seasonal businesses impacted by the restrictions. Applications are open until 31 May 2021 and even if businesses received payments during round one and two of the ARG they can still apply.

The grant, which is issued as a one off payment, has been split into three levels with a £9,000 award given to businesses most impacted, £6,000 given to those lesser impacted and businesses with minor impact will receive £4,000.

Licensed taxi and private hire drivers can apply for a one off payment of £1,500.

Nicola Monk, Corporate Director Inclusive Economy said, “So far we have paid out a total of £43M of financial support to local businesses. We want to make sure we are able to help even more businesses with this latest round so we have widened the criteria.  We have also increased the amount of the payments so businesses should benefit even more.

“We want business that think they may be eligible to check they fit the criteria on our website and then fill out a short, simple application form so we can process payments and get funds out as quickly as possible. Applications close at the end of this month and we’d like people to spread the word so we can reach as many of those impacted as possible – we really don’t want anyone entitled to miss out”.

The Business Restart Grant, another grant on offer, is available for non-essential retail premises with one-off payments of up to £6,000, and for hospitality, accommodation, leisure, personal care and gym business premises a one-off grants of up to £18,000. Businesses will need to complete an application form and the closing date for the scheme is 30 June 2021 with final payments made by 31 July 2021.

Businesses cannot apply for both ARG and the Restart Grant.

Businesses can apply for the ARG on the council's Coronavirus business advice webpages.
