11/08/2021 - Short suspension of glass collections in Luton

Luton, like all councils across the country has faced challenges with bin collections during the pandemic and we have worked extremely hard to keep all bin collections going throughout this period.

Unfortunately at the moment we are experiencing further disruption to the service due to a severe impact on our current staffing levels due to vacancies and unplanned absences.

We have therefore made the decision to prioritise the collection of black waste bins, green recycling bins and garden waste during this period that we are short staffed.

Unfortunately this means we will be temporarily stopping the discretionary kerbside glass collection service from Thursday 12 August until the middle of September when we expect the staffing issue to be resolved.

We apologise for the inconvenience.

Residents are advised to use their local bottle banks or our tidy tips on Progress Way or Eaton Green Rd to dispose of their glass during this period.

Please be assured that we are working hard to address the vacancies issue, which is not just a local problem but due to a national shortage of HGV drivers, and are running a recruitment campaign to fill these positions. As part of this we are holding recruitment events, one of which is being held on Saturday 14 August in the town centre. We are also providing HGV training to staff in related roles so they are able to step into these positions if required.

We thank you for your continued understanding and we also appreciate the support people have given our crews who are doing such an important job during what has been a very difficult 17 months.
