03/11/2021 - Luton retains green flag status for six parks once again

Six parks in Luton have successfully retained their Green Flags once again at this year’s awards.

They have been recognised for having excellent facilities, being well managed and maintained, having high standards of safety and for engaging the local community.

The six parks recognised are Brantwood Park, Leagrave Park, Memorial Park, Peoples Park, Stockwood Park and Wardown Park.

Cllr Abbas Hussain, said, “This is fantastic news and we’re delighted that our parks have been awarded Green Flag status again. Parks are very important for health and wellbeing. Over the last 18 months, our parks and green spaces have played a vital role for people through lockdowns as a place to relax, exercise and meet friends and family safely. This news is testament to the hard work and dedication of the team that make our green spaces a great space that everyone can enjoy.”

Commenting on the news that Luton has retained its Green Flag Award standard, Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved in making the six parks worthy of a Green Flag Award.”

“To meet the requirements demanded by the scheme is testament to the hard work of the staff and volunteers who do so much to ensure that these parks in Luton have high standards of horticulture, safety and environmental management and are places that support people to live healthy lives.”

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.

In celebration of this year’s announcement, Green Flag Award is asking buildings and monuments around the UK to #GoGreenForParks today to show appreciation for the spaces that mean so much to people.

Keep Britain Tidy is a leading environmental charity that sets the standards for the management of parks and beaches, and inspires people to be litter-free, to waste less and to live more.

This is a very special year for the Green Flag Award which is celebrating its 25 year anniversary.
