The theme of the event is #EachforEqual and will bring together individuals, volunteers and charities working towards social cohesion, equality and justice.
A series of sung performances, poetry readings and a solo violinst will inspire participants. There will also be powerful presentations from those working on the frontline to empower local women in order to increase the awareness of the difficult challenges facing too many individuals in Luton: Azalea, which seeks to counter the scourge of sexual exploitation and Stepping Stones, which offers support for victims of domestic abuse.
Cllr Lovell said: “Luton is a Fairtrade town and we will promote this by a sumptuous afternoon tea as part of our Fairtrade fortnight. I’m looking forward to meeting guests over a cup of tea with delicious cake. The event will act as a springboard for those passionate about human rights and equality and will be a wonderful opportunity for us as civic leaders to learn more about the marvellous work done by those in our voluntary and charity sector.
“I am truly excited by the potential of a Luton Women’s Network. It will be a platform to learn from and to support one another. The aim of the theme #Each for Equal is to understand that we all bear individual responsibility to be the best we can be, and in turn to support one another towards positive social goals. Whilst the event celebrates and empowers women, it is open to men and women as we all have a part to play in creating a fairer more just society.”
Members of the public do not need to advise in advance that they intend to attend. All are welcome to turn up on the day.
Attendees will be asked to endorse the #EachforEqual pledge.
