29/09/2022 - Help a young person on their journey to independence
Could you support a young person in your home and help them develop key skills which will assist them to lead an independent life? If so, why not become a supported lodgings host?
Luton Council has launched a new Supported Lodgings scheme where a host will share their home with a young person aged 16 to 25 years and assist them to build and develop the confidence and necessary skills for independent living.
This scheme is part of a range of options for young people preparing to leave care, who need a little extra support on their journey to independence.
Cllr Tahmina Saleem, Portfolio Holder with responsibility for children’s social care, said: “As corporate parents we want to ensure all our young people with care experience receive the best possible support as they transition to leave care, so they may reach their full potential.
“Our new supported lodgings scheme offers more choice regarding how our young people can make their journey towards independence. Supported lodgings hosts are the key in assisting our care experienced young people to take their next steps in education, employment or training from the safety of nurturing family homes.”
As a host you don’t require any formal qualifications but must have a suitable spare bedroom. We are looking for individuals who as hosts can give non-intrusive support and equip young people with the skills they need to succeed and move on to living independently in their own home.
In return we provide hosts with an income of £200 per week, a start-up grant to purchase essential room furnishings alongside training and support. And the young person will receive their own weekly allowance to pay for food, travel and clothing.
