19/02/2021 - Consultation on future of Stockwood Park Golf Centre

In response to a number of comments we’ve seen online, we want to make it absolutely clear that no decision has been made to close Stockwood Park Golf Centre.

A consultation was due to start on Monday on the future use of the green space area currently occupied by the golf club. This is part of a wider review of leisure facilities in Luton.

Unfortunately some information was leaked last night without the wider context which has caused distress and concern in the community. As a result, we have brought the consultation forward so both the golf centre users and the wider public can give us their views. You can have your say on the consultation:
There has been a notable decline in the use of the golf club in the recent years before the pandemic, so the aim of the consultation is to ascertain if there is sufficient demand for golf in the future, and if not, explore what other potential opportunities there might be for a range of different leisure activities that could be accessible to everyone. We won’t know this until we hear back from the public so please take the time to share your views.

If the consultation finds there isn’t sufficient demand for golf on the site, some initial ideas we are asking for views on include nature and cycle trails, a picnic area, a sensory garden, adventure golf and an outdoor gym. But we want other ideas too.

There are no proposals for using the park for any other types of development such as housing.

We are sorry for the distress caused by the leak of information without the correct context. We know the golf centre and the park is valued by all those who use it and that is why we want to get as many views as possible to determine the best future use for this site.

The consultation will run until 22 March and the findings will be analysed and reported to the council before a decision is made.
