23/10/2020 - Apply for community grants

Luton Council and the Local Community Led Local Development (CLLD) committee are pleased to announce the launch of the 2020 CLLD Small Grants Programme.

Community Led Local Development (CLLD) is a European Union funded programme which supports schemes to improve the lives of Luton residents. This allows people in the most deprived areas of Luton to have access to projects which tackle the issues that affect their physical and mental wellbeing. It will especially benefit groups such as older people and those with mental or physical health conditions and it will help encourage communities to come together.

These funds have proved to be a success over the years as they have enabled many organisations to improve the services and facilities they provide to support their local communities.

In the recent months of the coronavirus pandemic, community groups have been more important than ever. So many have made incredible contributions to their neighbourhoods, identifying and addressing needs in the most disadvantaged and deprived wards of Luton.

Applications for up to £5,000 in funding from the European Union will be welcome from groups which operate in the following wards:
  1. Biscot
  2. Crawley
  3. Dallow
  4. Farley
  5. High Town
  6. Leagrave
  7. Lewsey
  8. Northwell
  9. Round Green
  10. South
  11. Sundon Park
The process is a creative way of allocating resources and lies very much in the hands of local people as residents themselves are able to vote on proposals they want to see happening in their local areas.

Councillor Hazel Simmons MBE, Leader of the council, said: “In the past this funding has proved to be extremely valuable to local groups which are very often the heart and soul of local communities. The money will mean people in the most deprived areas of the town will have access to projects through which they are able to learn new skills and this will help tackle the issues which prevent them from finding better jobs. It will especially benefit groups such as older people and those with mental or physical health conditions and it will help encourage communities to come together”.

Community groups interested in applying for the grants can learn more about the process by reading our Community Led Local Development (CLLD) Small Grants guidance.

The grant is being administered by Luton Council’s Strategic Community Services /Social Justice team on behalf of the Local Community Led Local Development committee. Our Area Project and Involvement and Luton Adult Learning teams are available to support you through the process. In previous years residents have voted in person on the project proposals that they want to see happening in their CLLD neighbourhoods. This year, due to the Coronavirus the process will switch to an online vote. In this way the residents of the CLLD wards can still directly participate in the allocation of resources.

Applications for the funds are already open and must be submitted by Sunday 1 November.
