VE and VJ celebrations

Celebrate 80 years of VE and VJ Day with our special events.
Civic ceremony
- When: Thursday 8 May
- Where: Luton Town Hall steps
- Time: 9pm to 9.30pm
- Cost: Free
The ceremony will be hosted by The Mayor of Luton, Councillor Tahmina Saleem.
Featuring:
- a mix of music
- readings
- prayers
- culminating in the lighting of the beacon and singing of the hymn ‘I Vow to Thee My Country’
Vauxhall WWII Churchill Tank exhibit
- When: Saturday 10 May (12 to 6pm) and Sunday 11 May (10am to 4pm)
- Where: St George’s Square, Luton
- Cost: Free
Don't miss this rare opportunity to see a Vauxhall Churchill Mark III tank up close - an important piece of Luton's military history.
Discover Vauxhall's significant contribution to WWII and learn about the tank itself with experts from The Tank Museum.
Also on the weekend:
- live music from a vintage singer at intervals between 1pm and 4pm each day
- children’s activities
VE Day outdoor cinema
- When: Sunday 11 May
- Where: Hat Gardens, Bute Street
- Time: 10am onwards
- Cost: Free
Head down to Hat Gardens - grab a deckchair and enjoy golden-age classics from the 1930s and 40s:
- 'Bambi' (1942) at 10am
- 'The Wizard of Oz' (1939) at 12pm
- 'The Adventures of Robin Hood' (1938) at 2pm
