Black History Month

Luton celebrates Black History Month 2024

Community groups and individuals across Luton have been working hard to organise a wide range of activities that promote and celebrate Black History Month 2024.

There are events for everyone, from music, film and theatre to steel pan and African drumming workshops, a children’s book launch and carnival costume making.

Black History Month (BHM) runs every October in the UK. Black History Month 2024 is a momentous occasion to recognise and celebrate the invaluable contributions of black people to British society, with a particular focus on women of colour.

Councillor Javed Hussain, Deputy Leader of Luton Council, said: “Black History Month is a time for us to recognise and celebrate the invaluable contributions of black people here in Luton and across Britain. It’s also important we take the opportunity to ensure that the month is used to inspire and empower future generations.

“It’s great to see events happening here in Luton with different groups celebrating Black History Month in their own unique ways. I encourage everyone to pop along to an event to be entertained, inspired and educated.”

This year, the theme for Black History Month 2024 is Reclaiming Narratives. The theme invites Black communities to take center stage as storytellers and guardians of their cultural legacy. It's about:

  • correcting historical inaccuracies
  • showcasing untold success stories
  • celebrating Black excellence in all its forms
  • taking control of narratives
  • honouring heroes
  • challenging the stories that have often overlooked the contributions of Black individuals

It’s great to see so many events happening here in Luton and so many different groups celebrating Black History Month with music, film and activities for everyone.
