Black History Month

Luton celebrates Black History Month 2025
Community groups and individuals across Luton have been working hard to organise a wide range of events and activities that promote and celebrate Black History Month 2025.
Black History Month (BHM) runs every October in the UK. BHM is an important occasion to appreciate and celebrate the invaluable contributions of black people to British society.
Councillor Javed Hussain, Deputy Leader of Luton Council, said: “Black History Month is a meaningful time to honour and celebrate the important contributions of the black community. Here in Luton and throughout the UK it is also a chance to reflect on how we can use this month to inspire and uplift future generations.”
“It's fantastic to see the variety of events taking place across Luton with communities marking Black History Month in their own way. I encourage everyone to attend and take part, there's so much to enjoy, learn from and be inspired by”
This year, the theme for BHM is “Standing Firm in Power and Pride" celebrating the strength, resilience and unwavering commitment to progress shown by the global Black Community. Specifically:
- Honouring significant contributions to shaping history.
- Moving towards a future of empowerment, unity and growth.
- Ability of Black communities to overcome adversity.
- Profound impact of Black people as leaders, activists and pioneers.
- Looking forward, focussing on continued growth, unity and empowerment within the community.
- A call to recognise struggles alongside achievements, reflecting on lived experiences and showcasing Black creativity and culture.
Nominate your Unsung Black Heroes
Luton Council is also asking residents to nominate their Unsung Black Heroes for 2025.
Over 50 people have been recognised to date in the now annual event aiming to celebrate and widen knowledge and understanding of the Black African Caribbean’s (BAC) communities’ contribution to Luton.
This is someone who has made a significant contribution to their community. This could be the local GP, community or church leader, the neighbour who helps everyone, or anyone who has gone above and beyond in their involvement in the community.
Please use the form below to nominate your Unsung Black Heroes.
