Trees: maintenance and trimming

Trees on council owned land fall under the responsibility of the Parks and Countryside team. Trees that are on privately owned land do not.

Trees on council owned land fall under the responsibility of the Parks and Countryside team and are regularly assessed. Any safety or maintenance works are reported during these assessments and any necessary works are arranged.

Trees on the following types of property do not fall under the responsibility of the Parks and Countryside team and so any queries would need to be addressed to the owner.:

  • privately owned land
  • private residential homes
  • the land of privately owned flats
  • privately owned green spaces
  • private roads

What can we do?

We will only carry out essential works and we don’t cut down trees unless absolutely necessary.

We do consider requests to prune trees. Residents can log a call so that the trees can be assessed. However, as a general rule, we won’t undertake pruning unless absolutely necessary.

We don’t reduce the height of the trees as a matter of course, as this can stimulate rapid re-growth and could even cause defects growth, which could make any perceived issues worse.
