HMOs - advice for tenants
If you live in a house in multiple occupation (HMO) your landlord must comply with certain standards.
Please ensure:
- that there are an adequate number of amenities, such as toilets, bathrooms, cooking facilities
- view the minimum requirements by downloading the ‘Amenity standards’ from the bottom of the page
- that there are adequate fire precautions, such as fire doors, smoke detectors, alarms
- view the minimum requirements by downloading the ‘guide to fire safety standards for residential properties in Bedfordshire’ from the bottom of the page
- that the property is a suitable size and layout for the number of people or occupants living there
- view the minimum requirements by downloading the ‘Amenity standards’ from the bottom of the page
- that the common parts of the property, such as the staircase, shared lounge, fire escapes fixtures and fittings must be kept in good order
- view the minimum requirements by downloading the management regulations from the bottom of this page
All HMOs, where five or more persons form two or more households, require a licence from the council, to be displayed in the property. If you live in a property which you believe is an unlicensed HMO (or you know of one) you should contact us on the details below.
