Housing grants and funds

If you need help improving your home we may be able to help you.

Each of the different housing grants below have different terms and conditions, and you may have to contribute some of your own money. The information given on this page does not include all possibilities, so you can to find out more about each option by downloading and reading the documents at the foot of the page, or by contacting our private sector housing team on the contact details below.

Disabled Facilities Grants

If you have a disability you may get help to install a stair lift, fit a hoist or build a shower etc, or make other adaptations to help you. The maximum grant is £30,000. Follow this link to learn more about applying for disabled facilities grants.

The grant does not apply to council homes. If you live in one you may still be able to have your home adapted.

Minor Adaptation Grants

These are for less complicated adaptations. The maximum amount you can get is £5,000 and the grant is only available to people in receipt of qualifying benefits.

Relocation Assistance

This may be used when it would be cheaper to move from a property where adaptations would be difficult to make, to another one where the necessary adaptations would be easier and less expensive. The maximum amount of help given would be £10,000.

Decent Homes Assistance

This may be used for people to bring their houses up to a ‘decent’ standard. This is only available to owner-occupiers in certain parts of the town who receive qualifying benefits. Please check the list of eligible post codes by downloading the document at the foot of the page. The maximum amount of help for such works is £20,000, and takes the form of a loan which becomes repayable in full to us in the event of a change of ownership or breach of occupation conditions. For more information you can download the Decent Homes Assistance factsheet at the foot of the page.

Empty Homes Grants

These grants are available to bring long-term vacant properties back into use. The amount available will be 50 per cent of the required expenses up to a total value of £30,000. There is a limit on the total funds available across the town.

Follow this link to read more about what we are doing about empty homes

Healthy Heating Grants

These are available to owner-occupiers only, to assist applicants for ECO-based Heating Initiatives in meeting their contribution; and to provide urgent repairs/replacement for vulnerable clients.

Equity Release

If you are 55 or over and a homeowner you could consider using equity release to unlock your money from your home while you still live there.
There is an equity release scheme advice service (called StepChange) which is operated by the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) that is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority. Follow this link to visitStepChange.
