People who can support you while you're in care

People who can support you while you're in care.

Social worker

Your first point of contact should be your social worker. Social workers support individuals and their families through difficult times and ensure that vulnerable people, including children, are safeguarded from harm. Their role is to help improve outcomes in people's lives. They maintain professional relationships and act as guides and advocates.

Independent Visitor (IV)

If you can't see your family for any reason you will be offered an Independent Visitor (IV).

This is an adult who doesn't work for the local authority/social services and is there to befriend you, have fun with you and listen to you.

Advocates

These are adults who act as a support worker for you, making sure you get all the services and support you are entitled to. They are not part of the local authority/social services.

If you want, they can come with you to meetings, help you ask questions or understand procedures.

If you would like an Advocate, you can ask your social worker or Independent Reviewing Officer (IRO), or you can contact NYAS (see below).

How do I get an Independent Visitor or Advocate?

In Luton, Advocates and Independent Visitors are provided by the National Youth Advocacy Service (NYAS) on behalf of Luton Borough Council.

You can contact NYAS yourself, or a carer or professional can contact them for you.

Advisors speak several languages and have access to Language Line support.

Guardian Ad Litem

If your case is reviewed by the court (called 'care proceedings') then you will be appointed a Guardian Ad Litem by the court.

This is an adult who oversees the social services' plan for your care, finds out what it is that you want to happen, and helps you to present those views to the court.
