What is supported lodgings?
Supported lodgings is part of a range of options for young people preparing to leave care who are supported under the leaving care legislation.
As host, you accommodate a young person in your home provide a supportive environment in which a young person can build and develop the necessary confidence and skills for independent living.
In return we provide you with an income, the training and support that you need to ensure the best possible outcomes are delivered for our young people with experience.
The Supported Lodging provision is intended to meet the needs of young people over the age of 16, with a focus on independent living that offers some level of support and safeguarding.
Every young person referred to the scheme will have been assessed as having reached the level of maturity to manage in a setting where they will be expected to mainly take responsibility for themselves. Additional guidance and support will be provided by the householder, known as the host.

- We will provide you with an income, training and support
- You will receive a weekly fee of £200 for each young person accommodated in their own room, in your household through the supported lodging scheme
- You will received professional training to assist you in supporting the young person in the best way possible. Along with practical advice and support from your designated social worker
- The young person accommodated by you will have their own social worker or personal advisor. The social worker or personal advisor allocated will work with you to provide practical advice and guidance for you and the young person accommodated
- You'll receive an annual review that looks back over the last 12 months of as a supported lodgings host, which is an opportunity for you to reflect and feedback both positive and negative outcomes over the year
- We offer 24 hours telephone support
Luton Foster Carers Association (LFCA), is run by our foster carers as resource to support, promote and enable the best outcomes for foster carers, supported lodgings host and the children and young people in their care

As a supported lodgings host you will be able to demonstrate:
- sufficient ‘Life skills’ that can be used to enable a young person’s journey towards independence
- ability to maintain confidentiality
- work with social care professionals and other agencies
- provide feedback and advice in a constructive way
- you are able to respect viewpoints different to your own
- promote equality
- Engage in training
You will need to have spare bedroom in your home for the young person and some flexibility with your time.
No formal qualifications are required but we are looking for individuals who as hosts can give non-intrusive support which will equip young people with the skills they need to move on to living independently in their own accommodation.

- We will visit you in your home
- We will carry out basic checks; Disclosure and barring service (DBS) a check for criminal convictions, a reference from people that know you, health check, home safety check
- We will invite you to attend training
- Undertake a short assessment
- Panel approval; the panel is made up of independent members who assess your application for approval as a supported lodgings host.
You will have the opportunity to meet with your social worker and discuss the placement of a young person.
- We aim to complete the process within 6 months.
