On this page you’ll find information about how we can support you if you are looking for work, if you need help applying for jobs or if you’re in work but would benefit from some support.
What is employment support?
Employment support is a free council service for local people with learning disabilities, run by New Horizons. The team also offers support to people with other health conditions or challenges who are referred from the councils’ adult social care department.
I am looking for work, can I get some support?
Yes. Looking for work is not always easy, particularly if you have been out of work for a while, if you have a learning disability or you are worried about applying or interviewing for a job. Our New Horizons team is here to offer you support and they’ll work with you to find paid work.
The team will help you make the best of your skills and abilities. They will support you with practical tasks like writing and updating your CV, searching for jobs, filling out applications and interview training. They will also be on hand to offer you advice and guidance.
I have a job, can I still access support?
Yes. As well as helping people find a job, the New Horizons team also support people who have a job but might need some extra support. If this sounds like you there are lots of ways the team can help.
New Horizons offers on the job coaching, 1-2-1 support, mentoring and advice. For example, if your employer asks you to take on a new task we can support you to learn the task, so you feel confident taking on the extra responsibility.
We’ll also work with your employer to make sure they are supportive and fair.
How can I get support?
You can be referred to New Horizons from our Adult Social Care department. If you don’t already work with New Horizons and would like to find out more about the service, please talk to your social worker.
The New Horizons team is a member of the British Association of Supported Employment (BASE), follow this link to find out more about BASE.
Can employers also get support?
Yes, we support employers with recruiting and on the job support. New Horizons can identify and recruit employees free of charge. We also offer advice and guidance on Disability Employment and Access to Work, help to create a diverse work force and support to develop and run award winning employability programmes.
As an employer you’ll also benefit from the support we give to your employees, including 1-2-1 training, mentoring and job coaching.
