Recycling centres

On this page...

If you have extra rubbish and/or your recycling won't go into one of your collection bins, you can take it to one of our household waste recycling centres (the 'tidy tip'). You'll need a permit if you're in a van, trailer or larger vehicle (see waste permits and vehicle restrictions below).

If you have smaller recycling items, or you don't receive glass box collections, you can visit one of our neighbourhood recycling centres.

Household waste and recycling centres (tidy tips)

Staff at household waste recycling centres will be spot checking visitors on arrival to make sure they're Luton residents. A recent bill or driving licence will be accepted as ID.

Current restrictions

Restrictions are currently in place at HWRCs to help keep everyone safe. These restrictions will remain in place until such time as Government advice and guidance changes.

  • You must not visit the Household Recycling Centre if you or anyone you are living with has symptoms of COVID-19 or where you have been asked to self-isolate by a contact tracer. Stay at home and self-isolate. Anyone displaying symptoms should book a test immediately even if symptoms are mild. Do not leave your house until you receive the results of your test. If your test is positive you must continue to self-isolate for the number of days specified in government regulations.
  • On entry, you will be required to show proof that you are a resident and live in Luton - A recent utility or Council Tax bill less than three months old will suffice.
  • You will need to wait at the site entrance until the on-site team allow you in. We will be operating a one-in, one-out system. You must remain in your car whilst queuing.
  • Where possible only the driver should make the visit, unaccompanied. Only one person will be permitted to be outside of their vehicle, unless you require a lift with a heavy item, at such time a companion can leave the vehicle for the lift ONLY then return to the vehicle.
  • The sites will be very busy and you should expect to queue to access the site.
  • You are requested to separate your waste before coming to site to speed up your visit.
  • Social distancing measures must be followed at all times by both employees and visitors. All site users must keep a two metre distance from others at all times.
  • Black bag waste should only contain non-recyclable waste. We are collecting green waste, food, cans, plastics, paper, card and glass at the kerbside so residents should use these collections for these materials. We will not accept black bags that contain food and/or recyclables.
  • Due to the two metre self-distancing regulations no assistance can be given to offload materials.
  • Please treat our teams, and fellow customers with respect and consideration. Any abuse, or a failure to follow these site safety measures, will not be tolerated.

Waste permit and vehicle restrictions

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 social distancing requirements, we've implemented temporary measures and waste restrictions to allow vans and trailers depositing household waste safe access to our Tidy Tips.

Do I need a permit?

  • If you're driving a van, pick-up truck or trailer you will need a permit.
  • Only one visit per month will be allowed with all permit slips taken by site staff.

Before you begin

  • You'll need your car registration details.
  • If it's a hired car, you'll need to bring the documents when you come to the tip.

What you need to know

Site access for vans and trailers

Access will be only available on the following days and times due to space restrictions:

  • all day Sunday
  • Monday between 3pm and 6pm

If you arrive at any other time, you'll be turned away. Please be aware that you may have to queue if the van/trailer bay is occupied.

Neighbourhood recycling centres

If you have smaller recycling items, or you don't receive glass box collections, you can visit one of our neighbourhood recycling centres.

There are a number of small, locally placed recycling banks across the town, which you can visit at your convenience. This is to dispose of small quantities of recyclables, such as glass bottles and jars, tins and cans, plastic bottles and in some cases, clothing.

Please make sure you place these items in the correct bins and not beside them, as items on the street count as fly-tipping and will not be collected.

Visit Recycle Now to help you find where to recycle a specific item, what to put in your recycling at home and find your nearest recycling locations.
