Teachers perspective - my first year as a NQT

A selection of quotes from newly qualified teachers working in Luton schools.

Oreoluwa Adebola

"Teaching in Luton has been one of the most pleasurable working experiences I have had. Fortunately I was hired by a truly wonderful school that embraced the same ethos and values about the teaching and welfare of the individual children (in theory as well as in practice) as myself.

Chantry Primary school has allowed be to blossom as an individual and as a teacher allowing me to enhance my development. The support from the school and my rapport with my mentors has been “second to none”.

In my first year I was encouraged to take part in our school learning walks which helped develop my confidence but I was also encouraged by my headteacher to speak at a head teacher’s symposium about my experiences with thinking skills as an NQT. Although nervous, the support given by my head and senior team present at the symposium helped me get through the day. However, this particular event reinforced my reasons for becoming a teacher and committing myself to staying in Luton. I felt part of community striving for a common goal ‘to see that all children meet their full potential”

"Studying in Luton was a pleasure and very convenient, as I live here. I felt very comfortable in this multi cultural town. There are lots of opportunities to get involved in the community events. There are two local theatres that hold everything from dance, drama, comedy, musical events and open classes to the public most nights. There is a big cinema with English and Asian films on offer. Numerous sporting facilities and lots of the local school run educational courses. The town centre has a very big indoor and outdoor shopping centre with all the shops you need and plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from if you enjoy socializing."
