Icknield High School Deaf Resource Provision
Children have a place within the resourced provision if they have:
- an education, health and care plan (EHCP)
- a severe to profound bilateral hearing loss
- associated language and communication difficulties
Their placement within the provision is organised and maintained by Luton Council.
The Hearing Support department provides:
- education communicators to support students within their mainstream classes
- BSL tuition with a deaf tutor
- speech and language therapy sessions with a Magic Words therapist
The aims of the provision are to help students:
- integrate within the mainstream environment
- achieve academically
- thrive socially
Education communicators are qualified to a minimum of BSL level 2, with many being qualified and signing at a higher level. This ensures that sign support can be provided across the entire curriculum regardless of subject.
Students select their GCSE options at the end of year 8 and begin the teaching of them in year 9. This gives students 3 years to cover content and prepare for formal examinations in year 11.
