Icknield Deaf Provision (IDP)

The primary stage specialist provision for deaf children in Luton is based at Icknield Primary School.

This provision is for children who are severely or profoundly deaf and the children within the provision have an education, health and care plan (EHCP).

Their approach to teaching is to meet the needs of the child, and so a variety of communication methods are used within the school.

The service uses Sign Supported English most during the early years and Key Stage 1.

Some children need this to continue, but others shift to a more auditory/oral approach and use spoken English to communicate and make maximum use of their hearing through technology to access spoken language.

IDP also has some children for whom British Sign Language is a key communication tool.

Magic Words Therapy provides speech and language therapy four days a week at IDP.
