Home to school transport

The passenger transport unit (PTU) provides transport to schools for pupils who would otherwise be unable, or would have considerable difficulty, accessing education.

The 'home to school transport policy' (available to view or download below) contains the approved criteria for transport provision for educational purposes.

Regular transport routes exist for many schools, colleges and nurseries. These routes are serviced by private contractors, public transport companies and our own fleet vehicles.
The PTU administers all routes for both mainstream pupils and those with special educational needs by modifying existing contracts or establishing new routes to meet changing circumstances. The most economical mode of transport is used with the following being taken into consideration prior to route allocation:

  • journey time
  • disability
  • comfort
  • escort provision

Public transport is specified wherever possible provided it is suitable and appropriate for the pupil or student. Passes are issued or assisted travel payments authorised for individual passengers wherever appropriate.

The PTU also monitors the performance of contractors on a frequent basis to ensure they continue to meet the needs of passengers and current quality standards.

The home to school transport policy is regularly reviewed to ensure it remains relevant, effective and reflect the authority's corporate strategies. All invoices, payments, recharges, and other office and administrative functions are undertaken by the PTU.
