'What is language? Using talk and the body to do things'.
What will the lecture be about?
In this inaugural professorial lecture, Professor Weatherall will show what new things can be discovered about language by examining its use in microscopic detail in naturalistic mundane and institutional settings. Seemingly small matters, such as words that are cut off in the middle of their production or the placement of breathiness in talk, turn out to matter for what parties are doing. When studies include video recordings, the extraordinary synchrony of talk and the body can be seen, questioning prior claims of clear distinctions between verbal and body language. A close analysis of talk expands what is known about language and how it is used to do things, thus opening possibilities for doing them differently to transform society for the better.
Speaker bio – Professor Ann Weatherall
Professor Ann Weatherall is the Head of the School of Psychology at the University of Bedfordshire. Much of Professor Weatherall’s work develops knowledge from discursive and feminist perspectives by studying topics and issues at the heart of modern society, such as age,
gender, sexism, and violence against women & girls. Professor Weatherall’s recent research projects include examining personal safety and gender- This event is free to attend and open to the public.
