19/11/2020 - Ride through the cold weather with Winter Wheelers

This December Luton Council is again working with Love to Ride to promote Winter Wheelers, an environmentally-friendly, fun event that encourages people around the globe to ride their bikes and helps to normalize winter cycling and make it more rewarding.

Presented as an advent calendar cycling challenge for adults, the event runs from 1 to 25 December 2020 and is free for all who live and work in Luton to take part, whether they ride every day or have never been on a bike before.

Cllr Paul Castleman, portfolio holder responsible for transport, said: “This is a great opportunity for people to have fun, get some valuable exercise and at the same time help to make Luton a cleaner, greener and healthier place to live in by travelling actively and sustainably. With more people cycling it will help us to tackle the huge challenge of climate change we currently face and move us towards our target of delivering a zero carbon town by 2040.

“Riding a bike enables people to move around the town safely whilst maintaining social distancing and has huge health benefits, including boosting our immune system, improving our mood and mental health and increasing our energy. We hope people will be inspired to join in with this fun event and set themselves a goal, ride and encourage friends, family and work colleagues to take part too.”

Those taking part in Winter Wheelers will be entered into prize draws throughout the month every time they log a ride, with daily prizes to be won. This year Love to Ride have teamed up with top cycling brands Proviz, Loffi and Beryl to offer three winter cycling ‘must-have’ prizes of:prizes of:

  • lights
  • gloves
  • high-visibility clothing

Those who register in November could also win a £750 local bike shop voucher to treat themselves to a new bike.

Jack Windle, senior projects manager at Love to Ride, said: “There’s never been a better time to try riding in winter. There has been a huge increase in cycling this year and it can help us to recover from the coronavirus crisis by keeping us fit and healthy, freeing up space on public transport for those who need it and reducing air pollution, which makes people more vulnerable to the virus.

"We’re also delighted to announce a new monthly prize draw: everyone in Luton who logs a ride on our site will go into the draw for a £200 voucher to spend at a local bike shop. Winners will be announced at the beginning of every month from now until April.”
