18/02/2026 - Residents invited to tree planting ceremony to commemorate Luton’s 150th anniversary of borough status
On Friday 27 February, His Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire Mrs Susan Lousada, and Mayor of Luton Councillor Amy Nicholls will plant a tree to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Luton's borough status.
On 25 February 1876, Luton officially became a municipal borough, introducing a system of governance for the town with an elected mayor, aldermen and councillors to oversee local affairs.
On Friday 27 February, Luton residents are invited to St Mary’s Church from 11.30am to take part in the planting of a commemorative tree in the grounds. The tree, a Weeping Flowering Cherry Tree (Prunus subhirtella “Pendula Rosea” for those in the know!) will be planted to mark the anniversary and symbolise looking to the future of the town as the tree grows. Though this event is taking place at a church, residents from all faiths and backgrounds will be welcomed to mark this historic occasion.
The tree planting ceremony will be accompanied by a speech from Mayor of Luton Councillor Amy Nicholls, and a poetry reading by local poet Lee Nelson.
Leader of Luton Council, Councillor Hazel Simmons MBE, said: “This is a huge milestone for the town, and planting a tree at one of our most historic landmarks is a fitting way to mark this special occasion. We know that Luton’s history goes back much more than 150 years, but this anniversary signifies a big step in the town’s development. As the tree grows in St Mary’s Church yard, it will witness the transformation taking place in the town over the coming decades and stand as a symbol for future generations to see how far the town has come.”
St Mary’s Church vicar Rev Mike Jones said: “St Mary’s is currently celebrating its own 900th anniversary season and has witnessed so much in the town over the years. We congratulate the town on its 150th anniversary as a municipal borough, and look forward to many more years working alongside it for the good of all in our town as well as being a place of welcome for all who make up our diverse community."
The campaign to celebrate the anniversary – Luton 150 – is a town-wide celebration that will run throughout 2026. You can find out more about Luton 150 here.
