26/08/2022 - Council praises students, teachers and parents following release of GCSE results

Students across Luton have received their GCSE results this week and early indications are that it has been a very positive year for students in Luton, despite the multiple challenges faced following the pandemic.

This is the first year since 2019 that students have sat exams, following more than two years of disrupted education.  It is full credit to Luton’s schools, teachers and parents for supporting students through remote learning and keeping schools open in the most challenging of circumstances. These students have not had a ‘normal’ year of schooling since they were in Year 8, so their GCSE results in Year 11 are a remarkable achievement.

This year saw a return to exams rather than teacher assessment, and there have been some allowances made nationally to account for the pandemic, so we cannot compare these results with previous years.  However, initial school data suggests that Luton’s students rose to the challenge of these exams following the most disruptive period of schooling ever.

Cllr Aslam Khan, Portfolio Holder for Enhancing Skills and Education, said: “We’re very proud that Luton students have done so well in their GCSE exams following such a challenging few years. The resilience of Luton’s students, the fantastic commitment of our schools and teachers, and the support of families, the community and the council’s own education team have helped our students obtain excellent results.

“Staff in all our schools work extremely hard to ensure our children have the very best educational opportunities, particularly for those young people who come from more disadvantaged backgrounds.

“Whatever your grades, we want you to know that there is always support and advice available to help you consider your next steps – you don’t have to face things alone. If you haven’t received the result you were hoping for, please don’t get disheartened as there is always a positive next step for you to make and we would encourage you to contact the school or college you were looking to attend to discuss available options.”
