Stray, lost or missing dogs

Stray dogs are a nuisance and can cause accidents and damage, which the owner may be liable for. They can harm themselves, other animals and people. They also foul public areas and pavements. Owners have a responsibility to keep their dogs under control and not allow them to stray. Under The Environmental Protection Act 1990, it states that each local authority has an obligation to pick up stray dogs.

Once seized tray dogs will be kept for seven days, if within that period the owner comes forward to claim their dog a statutory fee of £25+ kennelling fees must be paid. Dogs that are not claimed may go on to a re-homing centre, where they get the chance to find a new home. Dogs are only put to sleep, in extreme cases, due to ill health or bad temperament.

Always make sure doors, gates and windows are kept shut. This can sometimes cause concern especially during the children's holidays, as they tend to leave doors and gates open. Make sure your fencing is adequate for keeping your dog in, thus keeping him safe. Dog owners are also legally required to ensure their dog is microchipped and also wears a collar and tag with the name and address of the owner.
