Friday: Now that's what I call partnership working

No matter how well you plan your day, just one phone call can change everything.

Today, it’s an emergency meeting with social services colleagues to discuss an urgent child protection issue that’s come to light. Cases like this are tough; but it’s good to know you can still make a positive difference to the lives of the children in your care.

In fact, since becoming a head teacher you’ve influenced the lives of pupils and their families in some unusual ways, from helping them find a new home to making sure they get the benefits they’re entitled to.

Working late tonight, so at 5:00pm you’re still at school, brainstorming ideas for the new head teacher recruitment pack. Ensuring a good supply of gifted and enthusiastic heads is one of the biggest challenges in teaching, but there’s loads of talent out there. And at Luton there’s a very proactive approach, both to developing internal candidates and attracting people from other areas.

And finally, a briefing session with your deputy, who’s standing in for you at a meeting next week. One of the most rewarding parts of the job is giving team members the opportunity to gain the experience and skills they need to develop their own careers.
